Update: Stabbed dog in recovery as the alleged perpetrator is nabbed

The man who is alleged to have stabbed a dog who was protecting his owners has been cuffed.

This is according to a post on the Soweto Animal Rescue and Advisory Centre (SARAC) Facebook page, which stated that SARAC and Ratanda police in Heidelberg, in Gauteng, worked together to nab the suspect.

“It is believed that the suspect was trying to stab his parents with a knife, and the dog came to their rescue and, as a result, the poor baby sustained six stab wounds,” read the post.

The Boerboel dog is known as “Buddy” and is receiving care at SARAC.

Many social media users commended SARAC on their work. Some of the comments on the post, which has been shared more than 140 times since it was posted on Wednesday, can be seen here:

January 24, 1.19pm:

A dog is receiving medical treatment at a vet in Kibler Park in Johannesburg after being stabbed six times while protecting its owners from their son who was trying to stab them.

The Soweto Animal Rescue and Advisory Centre (SARAC) rescued the dog from Heidelberg.

A statement on the SARAC’s Facebook page read, “It’s alleged that the son wanted to stab his parents with a knife and the dog heard the screams and came to their aid and, as a result, sustained six stab wounds.”

The centre further said that a protection order had been granted to the parents against their son and that the SARAC was working with the Heidelberg police to ensure that the son, who is currently at large, is found.

The Facebook post is receiving much attention and, by lunchtime on Tuesday, just two hours since it was posted on Facebook, it had already been shared 45 times and received over 200 reactions.

Many social media users took to Facebook to praise the dog’s bravery as well as SARAC for their assistance in the case. SARAC is based in Westonaria and aims to advise and educate the community of Soweto in a bid to create a link between animals and humans.
