Defacing of Simon’s Town Mosque condemned

City of Cape Town executive mayor Patricia De Lille is among the many who have added their voice to condemning the act of desecration of the Simon’s Town Mosque on Saturday.

A pig’s snout was left at the door of the mosque and pig’s blood was smeared over the entrance in the Western Cape town which is home to the South African Navy.

De Lille issued a statement in which she said the City of Cape Town strongly condemned the defacing of the mosque and called it a “heinous action”. She said the action intended to hurt members of Cape Town’s community and said it would not be tolerated. She further appealed for anyone with information about the “terrible act” to cooperate with authorities who were conducting investigations.

The DA strongly condemned the incident and DA Western Cape deputy leader Bonginkosi Madikizela said: “South Africa belongs to all those who live in it and its people have the right to assemble as well as to practice their beliefs.

“We cannot allow for intolerance to fester as being unified in our diversity is the only way to move South Africa forward.”

EWN reported that the Muslim Judicial Council hoped that those responsible would be brought to book.

The Cape SA Jewish Board of Deputies also condemned the act in the strongest terms and said they were “appalled”.

“This act of racist provocation is unacceptable and has no place in South Africa,” the board posted on its Facebook page.

Another person who added their voice to condemning the act is the Langebaan man who made headlines last week for calling for a mosque to be burnt down.

Liam Christian Ferreira took to Facebook to “strongly condemn those who violated the Simon’s Town Mosque”. He said he had done wrong in calling for a mosque to be burnt down and that he had repented, been forgiven and had forgiven others.

He said to those responsible for the act, “Peace be upon you.”
