Leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Julius Malema has called on the Democratic Alliance (DA) to remove ANC “cadres” in the administrative offices of Tshwane and Johannesburg.
This comes three days ahead of the ANC’s 105th birthday celebration to be held at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto.
Malema says any young person who will attend the event will be a traitor, and that the “Sunday occasion” is a gathering of the rich who are only going there to show off their ill-gotten wealth.
The former fervent supporter of the ANC says the oldest liberation movement in South Africa will not reclaim the votes of Tshwane and Johannesburg, not even in the 2019 national government elections. This after the EFF voted for the DA to take over power in the metros, removing the ANC for the first time since 1994.
“#ANC105 is the festival of the rich, the only way to keep them out of power is to remove anything that smells @MYANC in Joburg and Tshwane,” wrote Malema.
“The Sunday occasion is for the politically connected black elite, it is their opportunity to show off their ill gotten wealth.
“If you are young and find yourself at Orlando stadium on sunday then you are a traitor, the unemployed and the poor in Soweto must stay home.
“The @MYANC will not reclaim Gauteng, not even in 2019. The @Our_DA must now remove all ANC deployed cadres in the admin of Joburg and Tshwane.”
The January 8 birthday event has been hit with negative reporting, with some alleging the ANC applied to the Gauteng Liquor Board to extend trading hours during the birthday celebrations over the weekend. This was due to the expected influx of ANC supporters.
However, the ANC’s head of campaigns, Fikile Mbalula, denied these allegations, saying the party had no authority or influence over the liquor board.
“We have noted reports in the media, which have been to a certain extent exaggerated, as far as them being apportioned to the organising of our event. The ANC would like to state clear and categorically that we do not decide on opening times of alcohol, beer, hops and their closure at any given time, and we have got no call with regard to that.
“We think everything that is being done to ensure that we are a healthy nation, and caution our people in terms of excessive drinking, must also equally apply as we embark and host this particular event in Gauteng. Any reports that associates the ANC with regard to the changing of times with regard to selling of alcohol and accessibility have nothing and neither are they prescribed by the leadership of the movement.”
