DA lays criminal charges against De Lille over bribery claims

The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Sunday reportedly laid criminal charges against its embattled Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille.

This after Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, business man Anthony Faul claimed De Lille asked for a “payment” in relation to a potential deal involving automatic fire extinguishers, according to a report by EWN. It is alleged that the mayor asked for R5 million from Faul.

Faul in an affidavit reportedly alleges that De Lille in a telephone conversation told him he stands to make a lot of money from the business venture.

The DA’s federal chairperson James Selfe confirmed to EWN the party had laid charges against De Lille and she has already been informed through her legal team.

“That followed our receiving of an affidavit from a member of the public who alleged there had been a request on the part of Miss de Lille for a gratification some year ago. We have drawn that attention to Miss de Lille’s lawyers, before we laid the charge,” Selfe said.

De Lille faces a motion of no confidence tabled by her party following a series of recent scandals that have engulfed her leadership of the City of Cape Town. The motion will be debated in the City Council on February 15.
