Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority to immediately start investigating allegations of corruption and state capture contained in the leaked Gupta emails.
Addressing a Cosatu rally at Seshego Stadium, in Limpopo, on Sunday, Ramaphosa said there was no need for the law enforcement agencies to wait for a commission of inquiry into state capture to be appointed by President Jacob Zuma.
“Corruption is like a snake, and before it eats and kills people inside the house, we are saying we want to get rid of corruption. Those who are involved in corruption, we are saying, your days are numbered, we’re coming after you!” Ramaphosa charged.
In November last year, Zuma lodged a high court application to overturn the remedial action prescribed by former public protector Thuli Madonsela in her state capture report.
Madonsela recommended that the president institute a judicial commission of inquiry into state capture and that it be headed by a judge solely chosen by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng.
Ramaphosa said the commission of inquiry should be established as a matter of urgency.
The ANC presidential hopeful cautioned ANC members against allowing money to influence them ahead of the party’s much-anticipated national conference in December to elect new leadership.
“As you exercise your choice on policy position, on leadership position, you must only be influenced by one thing and one thing only – the interests of the ANC,” Ramaphosa said.
“It must only be the interest of the ANC that will influence you. You must not allow money to influence you. You must not allow people who want to confuse you; you must just be guided by the values, policies and the principles of the ANC,” he added.
Ramaphosa also warned against factionalism within the ruling party, saying members should embrace unity for the ANC to win the 2019 general elections.
“It is only when we are united that we will be able to succeed in 2019. We should keep our focus on 2019, and devise a strategy on how we will win elections,” he said.
