WATCH: Stolen CIT cash worth R2.6m found stashed in ice cream containers underground
Bank notes were found stashed and buried in both suspects' yards.
Limpopo police have recovered an amount of R2.6 million, believed to have been stolen by cash-in-transit security guards, buried underground in three properties.
The money was found when police arrested two guards separately on Wednesday night in Ravele Riverside area and the other in Waterval. Police searched three different locations through an overnight operation, producing positive results.
Banknotes were recovered from being buried in yards, according to police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.
Some of the cash was found stashed in ice cream containers and refuse bags while underground. Each of the suspects was found to have buried some of the money in their yards.
A third yard belonged to the mother of one of the suspects and she was taken in for questioning. The two guards were employed to collect cash from different companies, but took the money instead of making deposits.
One of the suspects had already bought a double cab, which police confiscated pending the outcome of the investigations.
The pair is expected to appear in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate Court soon on theft charges.
