News channel eNCA on Tuesday broadcast CCTV footage of the chaotic and violent scenes at Edenvale High School in Ekurhuleni last week, which saw two suspects being killed in a shootout with police.
Five suspects were ultimately arrested, with one of them an Uber driver who claimed to have been hijacked. However, the police have said they are confident about their intelligence on the case and evidently do not believe his version.
The men appeared at the Germiston Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
In the footage, the suspects can be seen trying to make their escape after their alleged robbery of about R8,000 from school staff went awry at noon on Thursday as the SAPS were already alerted to the crime and intervened.
Last week, SAPS spokesperson Sgt Jacob Mashile confirmed that the men had used AK-47s and handguns.
Police spokesperson Kay Makhubele said on Friday that they had found one suspect in the Edenvale area with two unlicensed firearms, and also recovered the VW Polo he’d used to flee.
The school reopened for classes yesterday, with the education department offering counselling to all those affected.
In the security footage below, one suspect can be seen being shot and then writhing in agony before he dies.
This footage may upset sensitive viewers.
