The Department of Correctional Services has suspended a female warder who was caught on video having sex with an inmate at the Ncome Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal.

“We have suspended the official involved and we’ve taken disciplinary measures against the inmate. Cellphones are just one item in the long list of contraband items that are not allowed because they cause harm to the victims outside and used to plan other crimes. They could even order hits on others,” correctional services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo told 702 on Monday.

The department has launched an investigation to establish whether this was an isolated incident at the centre. It is also investigating how inmates got access to cellphones.

Nxumalo told The Citizen the inmate in the video was in 2008 sentenced to life in prison for rape, robbery, house breaking with intention to commit robbery, attempted murder and attempted rape.

In videos circulating on social media, the official can be seen in her uniform allegedly engaging in sexual activities with the inmate, while a spectator takes a video.

The department slammed the actions of the inmate and warder as “shameful”.

“A video with scenes of alleged sexual activity between an official and an inmate at the Ncome Correctional Centre, KZN, has left the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) appalled, embarrassed and gutted,” Nxumalo  said.

“Sexual activities between inmates and Correctional Service officials are shameful incidents that can never be ascribed to what is expected of our officials.

“Correctional officials are expected to abide by a code of conduct and sexual acts with inmates are despicable and can never be tolerated.

“The official involved has been identified and she will be subjected to a disciplinary process with immediate effect. Disciplinary measures have also been instituted against the inmate,” the department said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the social media are having a field day over the video.
