Victim shot dead during attempted hijacking in Kempton Park

A man was shot dead during an attempted hijacking on Palmiet Street on Friday night, Kempton Express reports.

According to Gerald Groenewald from Sec Pros Security, the victim and his girlfriend were sitting in the vehicle when three suspects approached from behind.

“They knocked on the window with a firearm,” said Groenewald.

“The suspects pointed the firearm at the man and told him to get out of the vehicle.”

Groenewald said the suspects shot the victim when he refused to get out. The man was apparently hit in the upper body.

“At first we thought there were two shots but it was later discovered it was only one shot. The bullet went through his chest and landed on the back seat,” said Groenewald.

“One shell casing of a 9mm firearm was found about eight metres from the vehicle.”

Kempton Park SAPS received information about the shooting and upon arrival found the suspects had already fled the scene.

Const Dipuo Ditshego, deputy spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, said: “The woman told officers that after they had shot her boyfriend, they took him out of the vehicle and attempted to start it.”

The suspects failed to start the car and told her to start it but she told them she couldn’t.

“When the suspects realised they couldn’t start the victim’s vehicle, an Audi A6, they got into their vehicle and drove off,” said Ditshego.

The female victim told police the suspects were driving a black VW City Golf.

Paramedics certified the victim dead on the scene.

Cases of murder and attempted hijacking are being investigated.
