Ubers drivers allegedly targeted in parts of Soweto

Incidents of drivers allegedly being tricked into being robbed are increasing in the Diepkloof area.

Police from Diepkloof have been diligently searching for the people who allegedly trick Uber drivers into robberies around Diepkloof, reports Soweto Urban.

Three more cases of robbery have been opened at the Diepkloof SAPS, after all three victims reported incidents at the station that after an Uber was requested by a man who calls himself Sello, they have been robbed at gunpoint.

Communications officer for Diepkloof SAPS, Captain Phephi Matlou-Mteto explained that more Uber drivers have been tricked into being robbed around Diepkloof.

Matlou-Mteto said: “More cases have been opened at the station by Uber drivers who have stated on oath that while they were given an impression that they were going to pick up a client, they got robbed at gunpoint from their work resources and personal belongings.”

The person who requests the Ubers under the moniker “Sello” gets in the car and pulls out a gun before being joined by his accomplices for the robberies.

Ubers drivers were tricked and robbed in broad daylight around Diepkloof Extension and Diepkloof Zone Four.

Captain Matlou-Mteto said: “We are urging all the Uber drivers to be aware of these robberies that take place around Diepkloof and to try by all means to avoid being robbed further.”

The number of robbed Ubers is increasing, and so is the police’s concern, due to the violent nature of the robberies.

Matlou-Mteto said: “At this point, we suspect that these robberies are being conducted by the same people we have been looking for.”

Any person who may have a lead for the police on the case can call 079 890 7087.
