Two Lesotho nationals were murdered at kraals in Zamdela during what appears to be a violent stock theft incident, prompting police to request public assistance in finding the perpetrators.
The bodies were discovered on Wednesday after police responded to reports of a shooting at the kraals near R549.
Both victims, African males between 25 and 35 years old, had sustained fatal upper body injuries.
“When our members arrived at the scene, they found the two shepherds’ lifeless bodies in two separate shacks,” said Police spokesperson Sergeant Josephine Rani.
“Both deceased individuals were declared dead by emergency services personnel at the scene.”
High-value stock theft
Investigators found that approximately 23 sheep and 25 goats, with an estimated value of R150,000, were stolen during the incident.
“Further investigation revealed that a significant number of livestock was taken during this violent attack,” Rani said.
“We believe the murder of these two shepherds is directly connected to the theft of these animals,” she added.

Public assistance requested
The Free State’s Serious Violent Crime, Murder, and Robbery Unit is leading the investigation and has called on community members to come forward with any information.
“Anyone with information regarding the murder and stock theft should contact Detective Sergeant Ivy Maisa on 076 676 1473 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” urged Rani.
“Information can also be submitted anonymously via the MySAPS App.”
Police are treating the case as a priority due to the violent nature of the crime and the significant economic impact of the stock theft on the local farming community.
