Two people have been killed in a shootout with police in Marriannhill, Durban, early on Wednesday morning.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said police in Mariannhill received information from the community that a group involved in criminality in the area were living in a house in Luganda.

Shootout
Naicker said the information also revealed that the men were in possession of firearms.
βAt 03:00 this morning, police officers from Marianhill approached the house and requested entry from the suspects. The occupants of the house opened fire at the police officers through the windows and there was an exchange of gunfire.
βBoth suspects who were in the house, both in their twenties, were fatally wounded in the shootout. Two 9mm pistols were found in the suspects’ possession,β said Naicker.
He said police at Marianhill are investigating charges of attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and that an inquest docket has been opened.
Execution
The shootout comes a day after seven people believed to be criminals were shot dead execution-style in KwaMashu, north of Durban.
Naicker said the men were found under a railway bridge on Monday night, each with gunshot wounds to the head.
“All seven deceased were found lying next to a pillar of the railway bridge and in a straight line with gunshot wounds to the head. Police found 18, 9mm spent cartridges on the crime scene.
“Information received from the crime scene indicated that the deceased lived underneath the bridge and were involved in criminality in the area.”
Naicker said the motive is suspected vigilantism and that police are continuing their search for the suspect involved in the crime.
βThe docket has been transferred to the Provincial Organised Crime for investigation.β
Police have urged anyone with information about the shooting that could lead to the apprehension of the suspects to contact them.
