A man who recently robbed a SAPS officer of his service pistol while driving with him to be questioned about the murder of a woman who had been stabbed to death is fighting for his life under police guard in hospital.
He apparently shot himself on February 28.
The 31-year-old man shot himself at a certain house Sunday.
“The SAPS were alerted about the incident and upon their arrival at the scene, they found the suspect lying in a pool of blood with the firearm belonging to the police in his hand. He was still breathing and was then arrested and medical personnel were immediately summoned to the scene,
after which he was ferried to hospital,” explained Brig Leonard Hlathi, spokesperson for the provincial police.
“The SAPS further realised this was the suspect they had been searching for in a case of murder and robbery that took place in Dullstroom on February 19,” he said.

Hlathi alleged that the suspect was also involved in a recent incident in which a businessman was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash at gunpoint in Dullstroom on February 26.
“The man is currently facing a charge of housebreaking with intent to commit a crime unknown to the state, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, armed robbery as well as common robbery. The police cannot rule out any possibilities of linking the suspect to other cases and he is expected to appear in court as soon as he gets better,” concluded Hlathi.
