PIC: Suspects arrested in KZN after transporting dagga bales worth R3 million

Two men are due to appear before the Louwsburg Magistrate’ Court in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday after they were found in possession of dagga worth an estimated street value of R3 million.

On Tuesday, police received intelligence pertaining to a truck transporting dagga from Pongola towards Vryheid.

Upon receiving the tip-off, police put in place operations to nail the suspects involved.

Captain Nqobile Gwala said: “Various units in the South African Police Service [Saps] and other law enforcement agencies joined the operation.”

“The truck was spotted along the R69 in the Louwsburg policing area and it was stopped and upon searching the truck, 33 bales of dry dagga which weighed 1567.5kg were found.”

R400 million drug bust

Earlier this month, the Hawks arrested a suspect in connection to the R400 million drugs uncovered on the N1 highway in Gauteng.

In a statement on 14 August, Lieutenant-Colonel Philani Nkwalase said the total number of suspects arrested for their alleged involvement in the drug syndicate now stood at six.

“The 48-year-old additional suspect was arrested in Strand, Cape Town following further investigation by the team into a case where 805kg cocaine worth an estimated R400 million was uncovered hidden in a hull of the boat on the N1 highway on the 2 June 2021.”
