Police catch alleged Centurion car dealership thief red-handed

Police are hoping to link the man to similar crimes in the area.

Lyttelton police recently caught a man red-handed while he was trying to steal a vehicle at a car dealership, reports the Centurion Rekord.

The arrest was made in the Centurion CBD area last week, according to police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.

He was arrested through the combined efforts of the Lyttleton police and private security companies.

“Police are currently investigating the possibility of linking the man to similar thefts in the area,” said Miller.

“Especially thefts at car dealerships are being looked into.”

The man was expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon.

“He will face charges of theft of motor vehicles,” said Miller. He thanked all the parties involved on behalf of the police.

“The arrest once again shows that by working together we can combat crime in the area.”

Last week Miller warned motorists to be vigilant when it came to vehicle-related crimes.

This after police noticed vehicle thieves were increasingly targeting school sports grounds, social events and shopping centres.

“The crimes tend to happen at the weekend,” said Miller.

“We want to urge motorists to park their vehicles in demarcated parking areas provided by event organisers. If the event takes place in the evening, please park your vehicle in a well-lit area.”

Miller said it was always a good idea to have some kind of tracking device installed in your vehicle.

“Even if the tracking device is removed, it serves as an early warning system,” Miller said.
