More than R100,000 cash was found hidden in the engine compartment of a car used in a hijacking in Kempton Park on Wednesday last week, reports Kempton Express.
Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, spokesperson for the metro police, said: “A hijacked Ford Ranger was tracked down to a hotel by the metro police who managed to arrest two Tanzanian male nationals.”
While on the scene, the victim of the hijacked Ford Ranger pointed out a Hyundai Getz that was driving onto the hotel premises as the vehicle that was used to hijack his Ford Ranger.

“The driver of the Hyundai Getz, on sighting the metro police, abandoned the vehicle and evaded arrest. Within the engine compartment of the Hyundai, the metro police uncovered a plastic bag laden with hard cash amounting to more than R100,000,” said Kgasago.
The recovered Ford Ranger and the Hyundai Getz in which the money was found were taken to the SAPS Van Ryn pound in Benoni for further investigations and safekeeping.
A joint operation involving EMPD Kempton Park precinct officers, the EMPD K9, drug enforcement and by-law units and SAPS, also took place from 3pm to 8pm. The operation was to prevent illegal hawking and illegal parking of vehicles, which prevented the free flow of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
Police swooped on “problematic” locations, including Pretoria Road from Central Avenue to CR Swart Drive, as well as Long, Greyilla, Casuarina, and Kempton roads.
All the hawkers operating at prohibited places had their wares confiscated on all the targeted streets. The seized goods included a gazebo, clothing, footwear, utensils and fruit and vegetables.
Two shops operating illegally on Pretoria Road were shut down. Nine illegally parked vehicles were impounded and taken to the EMPD pound in Kempton Park. One driver was locked up for drinking and driving and one foreigner arrested for fraudulent asylum papers.
