South Africans took to social media to voice their anger over the rape and murder of minors in Sebokeng in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Police in Sebokeng arrested a 22-year old man on charges of rape and murder involving two girls aged 13 and 9 years.
According to the SAPS, a police officer responded to an alert of children screaming and in arrival at the scene, found the 22-year old man, the body of a 9-year-old girl who was declared dead on the scene as well as a 13-year old girl with multiple injuries.
Investigations revealed that the 13-year old had also been raped, and was recovering in hospital.
Police also confiscated weapons believed to have been used by the suspect during the commission of the crimes.
But South Africans have called for the death penalty on such cases.
“I don’t understand why a person who’s caught doing a crime should burden us with court cases and support in jail. We should just kill them in the next 24hrs…I’m tired,” said one Twitter user, while another said: “Sometimes I pray we don’t arrest such people. Sometimes strongly believe that they should die immediately for their sins and that death must be violent and painful. Now he goes to jail, at 22 he will live until 60… that’s 38 years of us feeding him. Sigh. Please make me President.”
