One killed after lone gunman opens fire on car in KZN

A man was killed and another seriously injured after a gunman opened fire on their vehicle on Friday afternoon. 

Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) said in a statement they received a call to assist a man collapsed and bleeding on the ground near local soccer grounds in Waterloo, KwaZulu-Natal. 

When Rusa officers arrived, they found a man bleeding from gunshot wounds to his chest, back and arm.

The man said his car was parked near the grounds, and that he suspected the passenger travelling with him was dead.

It then emerged the injured man’s brother was also in the car when the shooting occurred, but was not harmed.

The uninjured man told Rusa officers the trio were parked in a silver Toyota Tazz on the side of the road, waiting for a friend.

He said a man not known to them then walked up to the passenger side of the car and indiscriminately opened fire. 

The driver, a manager at the Mahlabatini taxi rank, and his brother managed to exit the car and ran down a pathway. The driver then collapsed.

The third man who died at the scene was a taxi driver. He had been shot in the head in the incident. 

The driver of the car was treated at the scene for serious injuries, but was in a stable condition when he was transported to hospital.

Verulam Saps were at the scene, and are investigating one case of murder and two of attempted murder.

The motive for the shooting is not yet known.
