Police have arrested two men in connection with a Sunday morning shooting in George that killed underworld figure Mark Lifman.
The two suspects were tracked to a location near Uniondale outside Knysna several hours after the incident.
The pair were allegedly driving a white VW polo described by witnesses as being the getaway car of the gunmen.
Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut confirmed to the The Citizen that the suspects were charged after a lengthy interrogation.
The suspects fled the George scene just before midday on Sunday, with Traut crediting private security, crime watch groups and law enforcement for their efforts in tracking the suspects.
“As a consequence, the pair were arrested a couple of hours later.
“In collaborative efforts to respond to crime and arrest perpetrators thereof, two suspects were questioned and are now charged with the murder,” explained the Colonel.
Police on Sunday confirmed the death of a 57-year-old man, believed to be Lifman, who had been shot at the Garden Route Mall at roughly 11.30am.
The 37 and 53-year-old suspects are due to appear in the George Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning.

Lifman was due in court in Cape Town on Monday for the resumption of the Brian Wainstein murder trial, which has since been postponed until next week.
Wainstein was shot dead in his home in August 2017. The case has endured numerous stumbling blocks, including a bomb threat back in 2020.
The Cape Town businessman has been linked to an intricate organised crime network and has previously been arrested on charges of extortion, fraud and money laundering, among others.
In 2020, Lifman and two others were arrested and released on R100 000 bail after being charged with multiple crimes.
