Man dies after trying to recover stolen cellphone from moving car

A man was pushed out of a moving vehicle on Witkoppen Road in Fourways in the early hours of Sunday morning after he tried to recover a stolen cellphone, reports Fourways Review.

Gauteng police say that the man sustained a head injury and died on the scene.

Captain Mavela Masondo, the Gauteng police spokesperson, released a statement which read that the victim had been at a shopping centre in the Fourways area with friends and was waiting for a lift when an unknown man grabbed a cellphone from one of the victim’s friends.

The suspect then ran and jumped into a white Nissan Almera, Masondo said.

“The victim gave chase and managed to get into the Almera. The suspects then sped off with the victim in their car and got onto Witkoppen Road,” said Masondo.

The man’s friends ran after the vehicle, said Masondo, and about 200m down Witkoppen Road from where the cellphone had been snatched, the suspects pushed the victim out of the moving vehicle.

“It appears the victim sustained a head injury and he died on the scene,” said Masondo.

A case of murder has been opened at the Douglasdale Police Station and a search for the suspects is underway.

A family friend and colleague of the victim said the family was appealing to anyone who may have information on the suspects to contact the Douglasdale police station.
