Hawks bust Wits admin officer and student for registration scam

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) have nabbed a Wits 31-year-old administration officer and a 19-year-old student for allegedly registering students who did not meet the admission requirements.

 The couple found a way to dupe the system to register ineligible students.

Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the pair allegedly demanded hefty amounts from applicants who did not meet the set admission requirements. They manipulated the system by awarding more points for entry into the university.

They were arrested after the Hawks’ commercial crime investigating unit and crime intelligence unit conducted an operation at the university’s Braamfontein campus.

The pair who were arrested at the campus are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crime Court today facing fraud and corruption charges.
