Four suspects killed in Durban shootout

Police said the four suspects are believed to have been involved in a number of robberies in Durban and Richards Bay.

Four suspects have been killed in a shooting in KwaZulu-Natal.

It is understood the shootout happened on Tuesday morning on Higginson Highway over the N2 bridge, south of Durban.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they found police officers and multiple security companies when they arrived at the crime scene.

“The crime scene has been cordoned off and at this stage it is reported that up to four people have been killed. This is still an active crime scene so the area has been cordoned off.”

Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal police said a vehicle used by the four suspects is believed to have been involved in a number of robberies in Durban and Richards Bay.

Private security spotted the vehicle at the corner of Cowey and Clarens Road before the suspects sped off upon seeing the security personnel.

Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala said a chase ensued towards the N2 offramp, south bound towards the Higginson Highway.

“Police officers from K9 unit, Airwing and other role players joined the chase. The suspect’s vehicle crashed with a truck on the Higginson Highway where a shootout ensued. During the exchange of gunfire, four suspects were fatally wounded. Three pistols were seized from suspects. The fifth suspect was taken to hospital where he is under police guard.”

Gwala said the recovered vehicle was hijacked in Pinetown during December 2021.

“Signal jamming devices were also found inside the suspects’ vehicle. One of the suspects managed to flee the scene and is still being sought by police.”

Gwala said charges of inquest, attempted murder, unlawful possession of firearms and possession of a stolen vehicle are being investigated by Chatsworth SAPS.
