Elderly man shot in alleged KZN road rage incident

A local business owner was allegedly shot at close range by a taxi driver on Friday morning when he was involved in what has been described as a road rage incident, reports Highway Mail.

According to police, the shooter fled the scene. According to Netcare 911’s media liaison officer Shawn Herbst, the incident took place shortly before 7.45am.

“We responded to reports of a shooting on Otto Volek Road in Pinetown. On arrival, another private ambulance service was already in attendance,” he said.

Rescue Care Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the man had been shot following what he described as an altercation with a taxi driver.

Jamieson confirmed that the man was now in hospital and believed to be 61 years old.

Later reports stated the man had been transported to RK Khan Hospital, where he was believed to be in a critical condition.

“Reports from the scene indicate that an adult male was shot in the head and abdomen in an alleged altercation with a minibus taxi driver.”

“The patient was treated on scene by an advanced life support paramedic and, once stabilised, was transported to hospital for further treatment. Circumstances leading up to the shooting will be investigated by the SAPS, who were on scene,” said Herbst.

KZN police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala confirmed that the shooting as being investigated as attempted murder by Pinetown SAPS.

“It is alleged today at 8.30am, a man believed to be in his late fifties was shot by a taxi driver after an argument whilst they were driving on the Otto Volek Road. He sustained a gunshot wound to the head and stomach. He was taken to hospital for medical attention. The suspect fled the scene after the incident,” said Gwala.
