According to police reports, the mother and her older daughter began arguing after the older daughter had been out all night and left her mother to babysit the child.
The mother then allegedly threatened to kill herself and her three-year-old toddler.
Concerned residents informed the police of the incident and the woman was arrested.
She appeared in the Durban Magistrate Court on Friday. She is currently remanded at Westville Correctional Services for attempted murder.
Cato Manor SAPS communications officer Cpt CA Sibiya said it was of great concern that parents resorted to such drastic measures just to prove a point in arguments.
“We condemn such criminal acts. The child did nothing wrong and should not be punished for the mother and older daughter’s doings. We applaud the community members who informed the police and we encourage more residents to let police know of what is happening in in their communities. This toddler has a bright future ahead of her and she deserves to protected. We will continue protecting the young future leaders of this country,” he said.
