“The EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit on Tuesday arrested a suspected cocaine dealer outside the Actonville hostel after monitoring the suspicious conduct of the man for several minutes,” said EMPD spokesperson, Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, Benoni City Times reports.
“When approached and searched, the man was found with a plastic bag containing crushed crack cocaine. He was immediately handcuffed and detained at Actonville Police Station.”
Kgasago said the 59-year-old suspect was arrested on Reading Road with crack cocaine to the value of R1,500.
On Wednesday, a silver Toyota Etios was hijacked around 8am in Edenvale by an unknown number of assailants.
“The vehicle movements were picked up around 3pm near Lakeside Mall in Benoni by Inspector Strydom from EMPD Benoni Precinct,” Kgasago said.
Upon realising that the metro police officer was after him, Kgasago said the driver of the hijacked Etios tried evading arrest by driving into Stewards Town House in Lakefield and closing the automated gate to prevent the patrol vehicle gaining access.
“Inspector Strydom summoned back up and the suspect was apprehended.
“The EMPD patrol vehicle was slightly damaged when the gate rammed onto its side.”
The 24-year-old suspect was detained at Benoni Police Station on a charge of possession of a hijacked vehicle.
