Armed robbers target NG Church in East Rand

The church's financial manager was followed from a bank and robbed at gunpoint.

The financial manager of the NG Church Kempton-Kruin, Frans Bester, was held at gunpoint at the church in Glen Marais on February 18, Kempton Express reports.

Bester was coming from the bank and parked his vehicle in the church’s parking area.

Const Dipuo Ditshego, deputy spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, said: “Bester said he took out his briefcase and as he was about to head for the office, he saw a white Mercedes Benz speeding towards him.

“One suspect came out of the vehicle with a silver firearm in his hand and pointed it at Bester.”

Bester told Express he didn’t fight with the suspect, nor did he run away.

“I handed him the briefcase without fighting or saying a single word to him,” he said.

“There were three of them in the car. As I turned, I saw one of them was standing at the gate, preventing it from closing and the other was the driver.”

The suspects got into the vehicle and drove off with the briefcase.

Bester suspects two vehicles were involved in the robbery.

“While driving, I suspected the Mercedes Benz was following me but when I looked again, I saw a silver VW Polo behind me and thought I was not being followed,” said Bester.

“But what puzzled me was that the VW Polo stopped a few metres away when the incident happened and took off almost at the same time as when the Mercedes Benz drove off.”

Bester also told Express security was being tightened at the church.
