Four recent SA deportees arrested in Zimbabwe for theft, attempted murder – report

Four Zimbabwean nationals, believed to have recently been released from prison and deported from South Africa, have reportedly been arrested for theft, violence and attempted murder.

Three were arrested for theft and unlawful entry, while the fourth man was arrested for attempted murder after stabbing another returnee with a pair of scissors, reports Zimbabwe’s Herald.

The four were reportedly moved into isolation after causing “problems” at their initial quarantine centre at Harare Polytechnic, only to allegedly continue criminal activities at the new centre.

Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told the publication: “The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Fanuel Mapaiki, 22; Allen Mungai, 30; and Tinotenda Chigwande, 25; on May 15 at Prince Edward Quarantine Centre.”

The three were charged with unlawful entry and have appeared in court and were remanded in custody.

Garikai Tawanda appeared in court on Saturday facing attempted murder charges after allegedly stabbing a fellow returnee.

He was remanded in custody.

According to the country’s secretary for information Nick Mangwana, some of the repatriated Zimbabwean nationals were “mainly former prisoners, some have different histories from murder, robbery, fraud, housebreaking and documentation problems”.
