Four of five escaped prisoners in KZN back behind bars

The prisoners overpowered police officers while travelling in KZN on Tuesday, and fled on foot.

Four of the five prisoners that overpowered police officers and hijacked their vehicle in a planned escape while being transported have been rearrested, reports IOL.

Zululand cluster communications officer Captain Nkosie Gwala confirmed to Vryheid Herald on Tuesday that a police vehicle was transporting prisoners from Vryheid to Nongoma in KZN.

The remaining prisoner is still being sought by police.

Reports indicate that 11 prisoners were being transported and that some were transported in a double-cab bakkie. Convicted ATM bombers were travelling in a vehicle behind the bakkie when another car blocked the road, which was when the prisoners overpowered the police officers, fired shots using their weapons, and made their escape.

No injuries were reported.
