EMPD officers arrest speeding groom late to his own wedding

This must have delayed his big day's proceedings even further.

A bridegroom claiming to be late for his wedding was among five alleged speedsters arrested by the EMPD High-Speed Unit last Sunday, reports Germiston City News.

The 24-year-old man, driving a Ford SUV, was stopped at 9.34am and arrested.

The operation targeting speedsters took place on the N17 highway in Germiston, between 5.45am and 9.34am.

Among the arrested was also an allegedly drunk driver.

The alleged speedsters were all males ranging from 24 to 38 years old.

They clocked excessive speeds of between 173 and 165km/h, and were all in sedans, save the bridegroom, who was driving an SUV.

The 34-year-old driver of a VW sedan, who registered a speed of 173km/h, was also charged with drinking and driving.

All the arrested speedsters were charged at the Elsburg Police Station with reckless and negligent driving but later released after each posted bail of R1,000.

They are expected to appear in the Germiston Magistrate Court soon.
