Government to look into ‘proper’ remembrance of slain Matwetwe star

Sibusiso Khwinana lost his life in a botched robbery at a mall in Pretoria on Friday.

Gauteng government is looking into how to properly remember the slain Matwetwe movie lead actor Sibusiso Khwinana, reports Pretoria North Rekord.

Gauteng sport, recreation, arts and culture MEC Faith Mazibuko said: “Just erecting a memorial stone will not be enough.”

Mazibuko said her department and other role-players in the sector would put their heads together to come up with an appropriate remembrance which would capture the young actor from Soshanguve.

“There is something which will enable us to remember him forever.”

She added that it was of no help to just rename a street, hall or craft centre, as the department respected the role artists in the sector held.

Mazibuko made the remarks outside the Khwinana family home in Soshanguve during her visit on Monday afternoon.

Khwinana was stabbed to death in a botched robbery outside the Sterland Mall after a screening of the film on Friday evening.

His phone was also taken during the robbery.

Forum for service delivery youth president Kgothatso Ramautswa said the community lost an inspirational person.

“We need to come together to fight criminal elements and ensure the hooligans roaming our streets are jailed,” he said.

Ramautswa said it was unfortunate that potential role models’ lives were cut short.

The police’s Captain Mavela Masondo said the friend Khwinana was with escaped the robbery unharmed.

Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba confirmed there were cameras in the city centre, but said he was not at liberty to discuss their locations.

A murder and robbery docket was opened for investigation, and arrests are yet to be made.
