KZN man sentenced to life for repeatedly raping granddaughter

The accused fled after he discovered that he was spotted committing the heinous act by the young girl's stepfather.


The Durban Regional Court sentenced a 50-year-old Wentworth man to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of raping his six-year-old granddaughter, reports Rising Sun Chatsworth.

On the fateful afternoon February 23 2018, the victim was at her house in Silvertree Road when she was approached by her grandfather, the court heard.

Provincial police spokesperson Lt Col Thulani Zwane said, “She was repeatedly raped by the accused. Her stepfather, who was asleep in another room, heard the noise and became suspicious. He proceeded to investigate and then saw the accused raping the child.”

The accused fled after he discovered that he was spotted committing the heinous act.

Community members were mobilised and the police were also notified. They started to search for the accused in the area, and he was later arrested on the same day.

He was charged for rape and taken to court, where he appeared several times until he was sentenced.
