State must appeal Oscar case – ANC Women’s League

The ANC Women's League will make submissions to the State on why it thinks the Oscar Pistorius case should be appealed, it said on Tuesday.

“Regardless of what the outcome of the sentencing is today, the ANC Women’s League remains dissatisfied with the verdict delivered by Judge Masipa finding Mr Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide instead of murder,” spokeswoman Edna Molewa said in a statement.

“Consequently, the ANC Women’s League will be making submissions to the State on our view that an appeal in this case is in the interest of the judicial system and the general public.”

The African National Congress Women’s League said it waited with “grave concern” for Judge Thokozile Masipa to pronounce on sentencing.

After a lengthy trial, Pistorius will find out his fate on Tuesday in the High Court in Pretoria after his model and law-graduate girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was shot dead in his house.

On September 12, Pistorius was convicted of culpable homicide for the Valentine’s Day 2013 shooting of Steenkamp. The court found him not guilty of murdering her.

Pistorius was also found guilty of firing a shot from his friend Darren Fresco’s Glock pistol under a table at Tasha’s restaurant in Johannesburg in January 2013.

He was found not guilty of shooting through the open sunroof of a car in Modderfontein on September 30, 2012, and of illegal possession of ammunition.
