Ramaphosa appoints Owen Lloyd Rogers as Judge of the Constitutional Court

President Cyril Ramaphosa has, in terms of section 174(4) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, appointed Judge Owen Lloyd Rogers as a Judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

According to the Presidency, Judge Rogers is a highly experienced Judge who has been serving as a Judge of the Western Cape Division of the High Court. He has been on the bench for the past 9 years following many years in legal private practice.

“The appointment of Judge Rogers as Constitutional Court Judge follows the President’s consultation with the Chief Justice and leaders of political parties represented in the National Assembly, the interviews conducted by the Judicial Services Commission and their recommendation of four names for the President to consider,” said the Presidency.

Judge Rogers will start his new position on 01 August 2022.

On 5 November year, the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) published notices calling for nominations of interested persons to fill vacancies in the various Superior Courts. The closing date for submission of nominations was set for 6 December 2021.

On 27 January 2022, the Screening Committee of the JSC met and compiled a shortlist of candidates to be interviewed at its April sitting scheduled for 04 – 08 April 2022.

The JSC then shortlisted six judges including Adv Alan Christopher Dodson SC, Judge Fayeeza Kathree-Setiloane, Judge Keoagile Elias Matojane, Judge Mahube Betty Molemela, Judge Owen Lloyd Rogers and Judge David Nat Unterhalter for the two vacancies at the Constitutional Court.
