Limpopo man gets life in prison for raping elderly woman

He used the death of a relative to lure her out of her house. He then dragged her under a bridge and raped her.

The Regional Court in Lephalale in Limpopo has sentenced a 45-year-old man to life imprisonment after he was convicted of raping a 67-year-old woman.

The rape took place in the early hours of the morning in November in 2017. The attacker came to her home to inform her of the death of a mutual family member.

The then 63 year old accompanied her rapist to the home of their relative. But on their way, he forced her under a bridge and raped her.

He didn’t stop there. The rapist then dragged her to a nearby mountain, where he tried to hang her in an attempt to conceal the crime.

But she escaped and managed to alert community members in a nearby area. A case of rape was opened and members of the Lephalale Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) arrested the man a few days later.

He remained in custody for the duration of the investigations and trial.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the sentence, stressing that perpetrators of sexual violence against the vulnerable – particularly the elderly women – should have no place in society.
