Doctors accused of Zayyaan Sayed culpable homicide expected in court

Two doctors, a paediatric surgeon, and an anaesthetist accused of culpable homicide following the death of ten-year-old Zayyaan Sayed are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court after they handed themselves over to the Hillbrow police station on Tuesday morning.

Dr Peter Baele and Dr Abdulhay Munshi have been accused of negligence after Sayed’s lung collapsed after surgery while he was in ICU. He was at the Netcare Park Lane Hospital in October.

The pair have been suspended pending an investigation.

Zayyaan’s father, Mohammadh Sayed, laid the charges in October.

After Zayyaan’s death, Netcare launched an internal investigation into the incident, suspending both doctors in the interim.

The Health Professions Council of SA also launched its own investigation after more families came forward with their own stories, claiming little ones had died, allegedly under Beale’s knife, or were left with permanent impediments.
