According to EWN, the man alleged to have let off a flare on New Year’s Eve that set off a devastating fire in Betty’s Bay in the Western Cape has been let out on bail of R5,000.
The man, identified as Sheldon April, appeared in the Caledon Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

It was further reported that until April’s trial, he was not allowed to live in the Betty’s Bay area. He has since been placed under house arrest.
One person was killed and two were seriously injured in the Betty’s Bay and Pringle Bay blaze, and more than 250 hectares of land were destroyed.
The flare allegedly set off by April landed in the Kogelberg nature reserve, where the fire spread rapidly, burning 40 houses to the ground.
