In a letter addressed to Cosatu general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali, Nehawu stated its reasons for not wanting Zuma to address the May day rally to be held in Bloemfontein on Monday.
“The recent special executive committee of the federation, following robust and frank discussions on the current political situation and the related events such as the recent cabinet restructuring, reached a conclusion that Cosatu no longer believes that the African National Congress and the republic, comrade Jacob Zuma is the right person to unite and lead the movement, alliance and country.
“In this context NEHAWU believes that inviting the president of the ANC to address any of our coming May day rallies particularly the main rally in Bloemfontein will create conflicting messages to our members, workers and the public in general. This possible confusion will intensify the existing instability within the movement and present a potential to further weaken Cosatu,” the letter read.
A suggestion was made to either have another “eligible” leader of the ANC or deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa replace Zuma as speaker at the event.
