Gardener ripped apart by pit bull terriers, now in critical condition

SPCA manager Mandy Cattanach says four of the six dogs were handed over to them to be put down.

A gardener of three years going about his daily duties on a property on Malcolm Road in Ruimsig, Roodepoort, was attacked by six pit bull terriers on Wednesday afternoon, reports the Roodepoort Record.

According to BCI Security’s media liaison officer, Gary Jordaan, information about the incident was received through an emergency WhatsApp group that led them to dispatch one of their Ruimsig-based vehicles.

Several emergency services were on scene including the SPCA, according to Jordaan.

“I’m told several shots had to be fired on the property in order to repel the dogs and allow paramedics to resuscitate the man, who was then transported to hospital,” he explained.

When asked about the gardener’s condition, Jordaan said he was told his condition was critical.

The Roodepoort/Krugersdorp SPCA manager, Mandy Cattanach, said four of the six dogs were handed over to them to be put down.

“The SPCA was contacted by members of the police, who asked for assistance as they required assistance with the six pit bull terriers that were attacking a person on the property.

“The SPCA will not be taking any steps against the owner as he signed four of the six dogs over to the SPCA to be euthanised,” she explained.
