One suspect arrested as funeral of slain Matwetwe actor gets underway

The late actor's friends and co-star formed a guard of honour around his coffin, while it was announced that one person has been arrested and two are being pursued.

25-year-old Matwetwe actor Sibusiso Khwinana is being laid to rest in Soshanguve, Pretoria north today.

Khwinana passed away at 25 years old after being stabbed outside a cinema in Pretoria where he was promoting Matwetwe, the film he can currently be seen starring in, reportedly after a struggle for his cellphone.

The emotional funeral is currently taking place at the AFM Hilltop Restoration Centre.

His devastated co-star Tebatso Mashishi formed part of a guard of honour, made up of fellow artists, around the slain actor’s coffin.

Gauteng Premier David Makhuru visited the family of Sibusiso Khwinana on Thursday morning, telling them that police have identified suspects in the case, although they have not yet been arrested.

Police minister Bheki Cele spoke at the funeral, highlighting the plight of crime in the country. “We are a sick nation … somebody must fix us,” he lamented.

Cele added that South Africa needed to tackle the psychological elements of criminals, in addition to the crimes themselves.

Cele also confirmed that one suspect has been arrested in connection with Khwinana’s murder, and two other suspects are currently being pursued by police.
