Bathabile Dlamini catches flak for saying women are ‘too emotional’

According to a report in the Sunday Times, ANC Women’s League leader Bathabile Dlamini “bolstered” her delegation to the ANC’s policy conference with six “expert” men because women get “too emotional” during debates.

Delegates were reportedly shocked to see the men in the league’s ranks, but Dlamini said it was done to improve “capacity in commissions”.

She said these experts would help the league not to lose debates as had happened in the past due to the fact that “we become emotional”.

The league does not allow men as members and was formed, historically, to battle patriarchy. It made gains in an ANC that initially did not allow women to join it.

They want Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to be the next ANC president on the basis that women have been sidelined for too long in the governing party.

Dlamini was also mocked for her strange body language and answers in a televised interview on eNCA in which she gave responses that were tangential and she said “eh eh eh” repeatedly. She took the view that the Gupta leaks are wrong because South Africa does not know how they came to light.

The paper further reported that she was teased by even those in the ANC, who joked that they were perhaps “seeing something” when they noticed the men in her delegation, but Twitter has been less forgiving.
