UPDATE: At least 15 killed in head-on collision between bus and truck in Tshwane

A head-on collision between a bus and a truck in Tshwane early on Friday morning has claimed the lives of at least 15 people.

It is understood the accident happened on the M17 Hornsnek Road. The road has been closed after the accident.

Tshwane Metro Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said details surrounding the cause of the accident are under investigation.

“The accident has so far claimed the lives of 15 people, two from the truck and 13 from the bus. Amongst the deceased 8 are women and 7 men. 23 people have been injured and three are in a critical condition.”

Mahamba said the MMC of community safety, Alderman Grandi Theunissen sent his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and a speedy recovery to the injured people.

“He further stated that as much as this is an accident, the MMC requests all road users to always be cautious, drive with care and be patient with each other on the road.”

Mahamba said the M4 and Rosslyn road will remain closed until the scene is cleared and urged motorists to avoid and use alternative roads.

Pietermaritzburg crash

Meanwhile, the KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department is investigating the cause of a crash in which 16 people died in the Pietermaritzburg area.

The passengers were travelling in a taxi which was involved in a crash with several other vehicles.

Officials believe the 10-vehicle pile-up was caused by a truck driver who lost control and overturned on the N3 highway.
