A video of an inmate from the Johannesburg Female Correctional Centre stripping is doing the rounds on social media.
The video circulating on WhatsApp has been confirmed by the department of correctional services, who say they were only made aware of the video on Monday.
The clip shows an inmate taking off her clothes in a provocative manner. The video was recorded by a fellow inmate.
Correctional services spokesperson Monama Mocheta said the video circulating on social media left the department dismayed and disgusted.
Preliminary investigations have begun, according to Mocheta, who said the department could confirm the prisoners in the video were indeed from the Johannesburg Female Correctional Centre.
“The investigation further revealed that this footage was taken some time last year.
“We condemn this incident with the contempt that it deserves, and we can confirm that appropriate disciplinary measures are being taken against those involved. This type of conduct is totally unacceptable, and we wish to apologise to the general public and those who have been exposed to this unpalatable video footage.”
He said the incident had highlighted the dangers of cellphones in correctional centres.
“We will appeal to the public, DCS contractors and our officials to desist from arming inmates with mobile phones,” Mocheta said.
June appears to be a controversial month for the department every year, with another scandal hitting the department last year, June 16, at Johannesburg’s Medium B prison in Naturena, where scantily clad women somehow gained entry into the prison and treated the prisoners to some entertainment.
Images of the women and their audience of inmates trended on social media, with the department saying the entertainers were part of the Youth Day celebrations.
