A protest for service delivery turned tragic when a community member was shot dead, apparently by a security guard who had been seen guarding North West education MEC Sello Lehari’s house.
According to The Daily Sun, residents were demanding clean water during a protest on Saturday when the man was shot. The next day they torched Lehari’s two cars and house, causing him to flee with his mother and father to a relative’s home.
On how they knew that Lehari’s guard was involved in the shooting of the family member, a resident said they had seen him guarding the house.

“We’ve seen him guarding the family house, and he also works as the MEC’s bodyguard. They get instructions from him, so it’s clear he told them to come and disrupt our protest. So residents decided to go and seek justice at his house. They wanted him to feel the pain they felt when their fellow resident died in front of their eyes,” the resident said.
Kay Makhubela, provincial spokesperson said cases of arson, public violence and murder had been opened.
Lehari was unreachable for comment.
