ANCYL calls for Eskom’s Matshela Koko to be suspended

ANC Youth League (ANCYL) president Collen Maine on Tuesday called for acting Eskom CEO Matshela Koko to be suspended following reports his stepdaughter had benefited from contracts worth R1 billion from the power utility.

Speaking to News24, Maine slammed Koko, saying it did not make sense for him to claim he was not aware what his own stepdaughter, Koketso Choma, did for a living.

“This is what you call radical economic theft … It’s like saying you don’t know what your son or daughter is doing at university. No parent would say that,” Maine was quoted as saying.

At the weekend The Sunday Times reported Koko – who took over from disgraced former Eskom CEO Brian Molefe last December – had allegedly channelled millions in tender contracts to Choma’s company, Impulse International.

It was reported that during his tenure as the group executive head of generation, he had oversight and influence on the supply-chain management process at the state-owned power producer.

The 26-year-old was said to be staying in the same house with Koko and her mother in Bryanston. Despite this, he denied knowing she was a director of Impulse International up until a month ago when he advised her to resign due to conflict of interest.

Maine said the ANCYL rejected Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown’s decision to allow Eskom’s board to investigate the matter and report to her department within 90 days.

He said the allegations against the acting Eskom chief executive were serious and he needed to step aside while the probe continued.

The ANCYL leader also called for Eskom to find a permanent replacement for Molefe or else the league would demonstrate against the company.

“When we want radical economic transformation, it’s for the benefit of the people, not for some to enrich their families,” he said.
