Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga came under fire from ANC councillors yesterday for nominating Johanna Nkomo as the new Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) chief.
The councillors argued that the new post should go to an officer who has served in the force for decades.
Despite their resistance, her nomination was passed by council yesterday and her appointment will commence once a waiver is received from Minister of Police Fikile Mbalula.
Speaking in the Tshwane council sitting yesterday, ANC chief whip Aaron Maluleka said Msimanga should readvertise the post to give other candidates an opportunity to apply for the position.
However, Msimanga said Nkomo had vast experience in the policing environment.
However, Maluleka said the appointment might not be well received by other TMPD officers.
But Msimanga pointed out that some of the internal candidates were not suitable as they did not have the relevant qualifications for the post.
Nkomo has come through the police ranks and has held several positions, including group leader and investigating officer: serious and violent crime unit head office; station commissioner of the Witbank and Sunnyside police stations; head: firearms and liquor and second-hand goods control.
