ANC stalwarts claim they’ve received death threats for criticising Zuma

The group of stalwarts and veterans is also not backing down on their call for the ANC to hold a separate national consultative conference.

Some of the African National Congress’ stalwarts and veterans on Tuesday alleged they had received death threats for their public criticism of President Jacob Zuma’s leadership.

Addressing the media in Johannesburg, the group said they were disturbed about the hijacking of MK veteran Thabang Makwetla, who was dumped in Brits, North West, at the weekend, EWN reported on Wednesday.

They also raised concerns about death threats received by senior MP Makhosi Khoza for her public comments on the state of the governing party and the upcoming parliamentary no-confidence vote in Zuma, which encouraged the party’s MPs to vote with their conscience.

“Every one of us is being profiled. How are you profiled? I don’t think that was a vague threat to say they’re watching and investigating us,” Shiela Sisulu was quoted as saying.

Police are reportedly investigating Makwetla’s hijacking.

Standalone consultative conference

According to a News24 report, the veterans are not backing down on their call for the ANC to hold a separate national consultative conference, despite the party’s officials setting aside two days of the ANC’s policy conference in June to discuss organisational renewal.

The group said it would write to the party’s highest decision-making body, the national executive committee (NEC), which meets on Friday, on their various engagements with ANC leaders regarding the conference.

“Through those engagements, we have consistently restated the position that, for the NCC [national consultative conference] to be effective and to do what it is designed to do, it should not be coupled with the national conference, because these are very different conferences, both in terms of form and in terms of content,” Murphy Morobe said.
