ANC Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) councillor Andile Lungisa was found guilty of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) by a Port Elizabeth Magistrates’ Court today.
It is reported that Lungisa had pleaded not guilty, and would be remanded in custody following the judgment.
He was accused of assaulting the former member of the NMB mayoral committee DA councillor Rano Keyser with a glass jug, which he smashed over his head during a council meeting in October 2016.
According to reports, the state had presented evidence of cellphone footage, which shows Lungisa hitting the DA councillor with the glass jug before running away.
HeraldLive reports the magistrate said during the handing down of judgment that Lungisa had been a poor witness whose version of events changed during the duration of the trial.
Lungisa reportedly testified during the course of the trial that he had felt threatened, and was acting in self-defence during the assault.
