African National Congress (ANC) MP Makhosi Khoza received death threats while conducting an oversight visit in Mpumalanga, parliament said on Wednesday.
Khoza, chairperson of the national legislature’s portfolio committee on public service and administration, monitoring and evaluation, was threatened after receiving phone calls over two days subsequent to her exposing appalling levels of medical care for patients at Matikwane Hospital in Hazyview‚ Mpumalanga.
“Parliament does not take the alleged threats lightly, and a report would be made to the Speaker of the National Assembly… in order for the institution to determine an appropriate course of action,” parliament said in a statement.
The committee paid an unannounced visit to the hospital this week and concluded a two-day visit to the province to assess the quality of services rendered to people on Wednesday.
Khoza rose to the national spotlight when she chaired a special parliamentary committee to select a new public protector and during an inquiry into the affairs of the SABC in December last year.
Parliament has condemned the death threats against the chairperson and said the phone calls would be reported to law enforcement agencies for investigation.
