ANC ‘indecision’ close to giving opposition power on ‘silver platter’ – Khoza

Outspoken African National Congress (ANC) member of parliament Makhosi Khoza has weighed in on the challenges facing the ruling party, saying politics of patronage within the party have claimed the “sanity” of its leadership.

Khoza took to Facebook at the weekend to express her views on last Friday’s nationwide marches calling for President Jacob Zuma to resign and issued a wakeup call to Africa’s oldest liberation movement.

She said she chose to see the anti-Zuma marches not as conspiracies of “white monopoly capital”, as it has been suggested by some members of the ANC, but as genuine concerns of the majority of the marchers.

“The marches I witnessed across the country were not different from women’s march against pass laws. They were the same as the March against Mike Gatting’s disregard for International Sanctions against apartheid South Africa‚” Khoza said.

As a senior ANC MP, Khoza shot to the national spotlight as the chairperson of parliament’s ad-hoc committee that was tasked with interviewing candidates to replace former public protector Thuli Madonsela, as well as a member of parliament’s special committee that probed the fitness of the SABC board to hold office.

She said if the ANC failed to deal with the country’s most pressing challenges, the party would be effectively giving power on a “silver platter” to opposition parties.

“Politics of patronage has finally claimed the sanity of my ANC leadership. A triumphant story has turned tragic in my lifetime. The ANC is defining itself out of power when the majority of its people remain trapped in poverty‚ joblessness‚ dependency on state social grants.

“The South African tragedy is an African continent catastrophe. I wish my ANC leaders could see what I see. I wish my ANC leadership could feel what I feel. I wish they can understand that indecision is tantamount to giving DA‚ EFF … power on a silver platter,” she said.

Khoza also said unity within the ANC should not be accompanied by blind loyalty.

“We are directed to maintain unity at all cost even if leads us to the ditch. We are instructed to follow directionless directives without questioning or raising the risks‚ concerns for the route we are taking even if it leads us to the wasteland.”

She is currently the chairperson of the portfolio committee on public service and administration.
