ANC councillor Andile Lungisa to spend two years behind bars

African National Congress (ANC) councillor Andile Lungisa, convicted of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, has been sentenced to three years by the Port Elizabeth Regional Court, News24 reports.

Last month, Lungisa was found guilty of intentionally smashing a glass jug over the head of former mayoral committee member for transport Rano Kayser during a chaotic 2016 Nelson Mandela Bay council meeting.

Kayser sustained multiple lacerations to his head and neck with pictures depicting him being drenched in blood at the time. The violent fracas saw blood being shed while other councillors received trauma counselling.

It is reported that Magistrate Morne Cannon said Lungisa had shown no remorse.

Lungisa was sentenced to three years, with one year suspended for a five-year period, meaning the ANC councillor will spend two years behind bars.

Evidence presented before court, included a video taken by Democratic Alliance councillor Renaldo Gouws, which showed how Lungisa slammed the jug over Kayser’s head, before he fled and how Kayser fell backwards and landed on the floor.

Magistrate Morne Cannon earlier found that Lungisa was a poor witness who “tailored his version as the trial proceeded”. He said Lungisa was vague, evasive and contradicted himself during the trial.

Cannon further said Lungisa’s version that Kayser wanted to assault him was not supported in the video footage.
